A deep dive into the technology behind CheqMate Shield — from gaze tracking to behavioral analysis and AI copilot detection.

Detection That Works Without Disruption

The biggest challenge in interview fraud detection isn't the technology — it's doing it without disrupting the interview experience. Candidates shouldn't feel like they're under surveillance, and interviewers shouldn't need to change how they conduct interviews.

CheqMate AI runs silently in the background, analyzing multiple signal layers simultaneously.

The Detection Stack

1. Gaze & Attention Tracking

Our models analyze eye movement patterns to detect:

  • Frequent off-screen glances consistent with reading from a second monitor or hidden overlay
  • Unnatural fixation patterns that suggest reading AI-generated text
  • Head position anomalies that indicate someone else may be present off-camera

2. Behavioral Analysis

Every candidate has a unique behavioral signature. We track:

  • Response latency — the gap between question and answer. AI-assisted candidates often show unnaturally consistent timing
  • Speech pattern changes — shifts in vocabulary, complexity, or confidence that suggest switching between genuine and assisted answers
  • Typing cadence — for coding interviews, we detect patterns consistent with copy-pasting vs. genuine coding

3. Environment Verification

We check the candidate's technical environment for:

  • Running AI tools — detection of 50+ known interview cheating applications
  • Remote desktop sessions — AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and other screen-sharing tools
  • Virtual machines — sandboxed environments that might hide cheating tools
  • Browser extensions — injected code or transparent overlays

4. Identity Verification

Multi-layered checks including:

  • Deepfake detection — analysis of facial micro-expressions and rendering artifacts
  • Lip-sync verification — ensuring audio matches visible speech
  • Session consistency — verifying the same person is present throughout

Trust Scoring

All signals feed into a real-time Trust Score that gives interviewers a clear, at-a-glance assessment. No jargon, no complex dashboards — just a score from 0–100 with flagged events you can review.

What Makes This Different

Unlike proctoring tools designed for exams, CheqMate AI is built specifically for live video interviews. We understand the nuances — candidates get nervous, look at notes occasionally, and take a moment to think. Our models are trained to distinguish normal interview behavior from genuine fraud signals.
